Activella is used by women who have passed menopause to prevent osteoporosis that occurs in postmenopausal women. This generic drug represents the primary female hormone- estrogen and brings about all its actions by emulating endogenous estrogen hormone. Although its primary function is to prevent osteoporosis, it is also used to treat menopausal vasomotor symptoms and vaginal and vulvar atrophy in postmenopausal women. Treatment with Activella must ensue only after conventional non-hormonal treatment modalities have been considered and deemed ineffective or inappropriate. However, this medication cannot be used by those women who have had their uterus removed surgically (hysterectomies).
