Coartem Drug Information
Coartem is an anti-malarial drug. It is a combination drug. It has two components, artemether and lumefantrine. The former is derived from artemisinin. The later is a benflumentol. The drug is used for the treatment of acute malaria (which is uncomplicated). The drug is effective in treating malarial infection that is caused by Plasmodium falciparum. This generic drug is recommended for patients with body weight of 5 kg and above. Artemether component of the drug acts by metabolizing to form DHA (dihydroartemisinin). However, the exact mode of action for lumefantrine is not clear. With a prescription from a doctor, Coartem can be ordered from North Meds.
Coartem Dosage Information
The recommended dose of Coartem in adults (> 16 years age) is a total course of 24 tablets. It is administered as four tablets, which are given as a single dosage. Again after 8 hours another dose of four tablets is given, followed by four tablets twice daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. A total of six doses are given in 3 days. In children (< 16 years age) the doses change according to the bodyweight. Coartem is available with North Meds at a cheap price in doses of 80/480 mg and 20/120 mg.
Side Effects and Precautions for Coartem
Once you start the treatment with Artemether/ Lumefantrine, you may encounter several common and serious side effects. The common side effects of the drug include nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, cough, mild headache, joints pain, muscle pain and insomnia. Coartem may lead to certain serious effects also. These effects may include dizziness, fast heartbeats, pounding heartbeats, fainting, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhea, stomach pain, clay color stools and darker urine.
Other serious effects that may be associated with Artemether/ Lumefantrine are symptoms of jaundice (like skin and eyes turning yellow in color) or worsening of the malarial symptoms. You must seek medical help if you have allergic reactions like rashes or hives. Also, let your doctor know before you start on Coartem if you are allergic to the drug or to any of the drug’s contents.
