Dantrium Drug Information
Dantrium is a muscle relaxant used to treat chronic and intense muscle spasms or stiffness. Patient who suffer from conditions such as spinal cord injury, stoke, multiple sclerosis & cerebral palsy. This generic drug prevents muscle stiffness caused by malignant hyperthermia caused due to certain types of anesthesia used during surgery. Avoid Dantrium if you have liver disease such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. Similar precautions should be taken if you have heart disease, breathing disorder like COPD or a history of heart attack. Dantrium Dosage Information
Recommended dose to treat Hyperthermia pre-operatively is 4-8 mg/kg/day orally, divided into 3-4 doses over a period of 1–2 days before surgery. After Hyperthermia the dosage is 4-8 mg/kg/day divided into 4 doses over a period of 1-3 days. The recommended dose in pediatric patients is 0.5 mg/kg/day for 7 days to treat chronic-spasticity. The does can be adjusted to 0.5 mg/kg, 1 mg/kg or 2 mg/kg TID for 7 days. Dosage for adults is 25 mg/kg, can be adjusted to 50 mg/kg then to 100 mg/kg TID. Side Effects and Precautions For Dantrium
Dantrolene should not be given to children younger than 5 years. Avoid this drug if you are breastfeeding as it may pass through breast milk and harm the baby. This drug should not be used when muscle tone is needed for certain activities and for safe balance. Dantrium may impair your thinking or reactions.
Dantrolene may cause allergic reactions like problem breathing; hives; swelling up of face, lips & tongue. Inform your doctor if you feel limb weakness, continual sleepiness, dizziness and a feeling of light headedness. Avoid alcohol as it increases side effects of Dantrium. Get emergency medical help if you have severe diarrhea; easy bruising or bleeding; trouble swallowing; nausea, stomach pain, fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice ;coughing up blood; seizure; less urination.
