Malarone is from the class of drugs known as naphthalenes. It is a ubiquinone analogue. The drug is an anti-malarial agent. It is a combination drug. The drug is used for the prevention as well as treatment of malaria. It is used as prophylaxis of the malaria caused due to P-falciparum. The generic drug is also effective against those strains that have developed resistance to chloroquine. The drug is also used for treating acute uncomplicated malaria. Malarone Dosage Information
The recommended dose of Malarone for treating malaria in adults, is one tablet perday. Each tablet consists of atovaquone (250 mg) and proguanil-hydrochloride (100 mg). In pediatric population, the dose depends on the patient’s body weight. For patients with body weight < 40 kg, the dose may range from 62.5 mg/25 mg to 187.5 mg/75 mg. For patients > 40 kg body weight, the dose is 250 mg/100 mg. Malarone is offered by North Meds at cheap prices with doses of 250/100 mg and 62.525 mg.
Side Effects and Precautions for Malarone
Once you begin the treatment with Atovaquone/ Proguanil, you may have side effects that may be serious or non-serious. The less serious effects of the drug may be headache, dizziness, mild itching, weakness, mild diarrhea and mild stomach pain. After taking Malarone if you have any of these effects that become worse then get medical attention. Serious side effects of the drug may include nausea, uncontrolled and severe vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores, fever, severe rashes on the skin, stomach pain, clay colored stools and darker urine. Atovaquone/ Proguanil may also cause signs of jaundice (skin and eyes becoming yellow) and easy bruising and bleeding (from vagina, mouth, rectum or nose).
