Merrem Drug Information
Merrem is an injectable antibiotic agent, which is an ultra-broad spectrum agent. It belongs to carbapenem class of antibiotics. The drug is used to treat a wide range of infections like pneumonia and bacterial meningitis. Primarily the drug is used for treating SSSI (that is Skin and Skin-Structure Infection). In addition, this generic drug is used for treating intra-abdominal infection. The drug is not recommended for patients who are < 3 months old. The drug acts by interfering with the bacterial development and leads to the death of the bacteria. The drug is not recommended for treating viral or fungal infections. Merrem Dosage Information
Merrem is administered through IV infusion over a period of 15 – 30 minutes. In adults, the recommended dose is 500 mg for treating SSSI. The drug is administered every 8 hours. For treating intra-abdominal infection, 1 g is administered, once in 8 hours. A bolus dose may also be administered as 1g and the IV infusion is given over 3-5 minutes. The pediatric doses depend upon the patient’s body weight. North Meds offers Merrem at doses of 500 mg and 1 gm.
Side Effects and Precautions for Merrem
Less serious side effects that you may have, after starting the treatment with Meropenem are vomiting, constipation, nausea, diarrhea and headache. The drug may also cause reddening, soreness and mild swelling at the site of injection (where the drug was administered). Serious side effects of Merrem may include seizures (or convulsions), watery or severe diarrhea, unexplained weakness and bleeding and bruising easily. You may have allergic reactions also, after starting the treatment. These reactions of Meropenem may include hives, skin rashes, difficulty in breathing and swelling (in your tongue, lips or face). Let your doctor know immediately if you have any serious effect or allergic drug reactions.
