Sporanox Drug Information

The drug is used to treat external or internal fungal infections. It blocks the formation of the membrane of fungal cells, which kills fungi. Sporanox is used to treat the following kinds of fungal infections: blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, aspergillosis in patients who do not tolerate therapy with amphotericin B and toenail or fingernail onychomycosis. Prior to treatment specimens of fungal cultures should be obtained and the organisms responsible for the infection should be identified. Then the respective therapy should be adjusted according to the type of infection.

Sporanox Drug Dosage

For blastomycosis or histoplasmosis the Itraconazole dosage is 200 mg once a day. If no improvement is observed, the dosage should be increased in 100 mg increments to maximum 400 mg a day. Dosages exceeding 200 mg daily should be administered in two parts. For aspergillosis the daily dosage is 200 to 400 mg. In life threatening cases there is a loading dose which includes 200 mg three times a day, i.e. 600 mg daily during the first three days.

For onychomycosis the dosage is 200 mg once a day in the course of 12 weeks. For onychomycosis of fingernails the dosage is two pulses of treatment, each lasting for a week, involving 200 mg a day. Side Effects and Precautions for Sporanox
