Visudyne Drug Information

Visudyne helps in improving the eyes’ sensitivity to light. This generic drug affects the abnormal blood vessels in the eye. This drug is used along with “photodynamic” laser light therapy for treating blood vessel disorders in the eye caused due to macular degeneration or other eye diseases. Your doctor may prescribe the use of this drug for other purposes also.

Side Effects and Precautions for Visudyne

Inform your doctor at once if you have serious side effects such as severe reduction in vision, sudden and severe pain, chest pain, eye pain or seeing halos around lights, severe redness or discoloration of the eyes, feeling like you may pass out or a warm tingly feeling under your skin. Using Verteporfin may also lead to less serious side effects like dry eyes, redness, swelling and itching of your eyelids, headache, weak or tired feeling, seeing flashes of light, nausea, constipation, joint pain, muscle weakness, swelling, bleeding, itching and pain at the injection site, mild skin rash and slight changes in vision.

Do not use Verteporfin if you are allergic to it or if you suffer from porphyria, a kind of genetic enzyme disorder that causes symptoms affecting your skin or nervous system. Before using Visudyne, tell your doctor if you have any gall bladder disease, liver disease or if you are currently receiving any radiation treatment. Avoid using this drug if you are pregnant or planning for a pregnancy as this medication can cause harm to the unborn baby. If you are a breast-feeding mother, do not use Visudyne since this drug can pass into breast milk easily.
